For many the American movie producer and director Hal Roach is the “King of Comedy”.  His legendary studios are also called the “The Lot of Fun”: Hollywood’s “Fun Factory”! The film pioneer produced from 1914 up to the early sixties about 2.000 movies – almost exclusively comedies! Probably no other filmmaker gave the world more to laugh about than he did: with his comedy stars like Laurel & Hardy, Harold Lloyd or „Our Gang“.

Besides the incredible live and work of Hal Roach the international documentary is focused on his stars and competitors like Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton. The film is presenting a lot of funny movie clips and interviews, a look behind the scenes, amazing facts about the comedy stars and their private lives and amongst others never before published private footage, previously unreleased movie clips and photographs.

The award-winning documentary features as well a lot of amusing and interesting interviews with Hal Roach himself and family members, Roach´s stars like Harold Lloyd or Jean Darling from “Our Gang”, Stan Laurel´s daughter, Harold Lloyd´s granddaughter, film historians, comedy experts and comedians like Walter Matthau.

Denn der Film-Pionier hat von 1914 bis Anfang der sechziger Jahre rund 2.000 Filme produziert – fast ausschließlich Komödien! This unreleased original American version was considered lost. The movie was recently discovered in the USA and digitally restored. For the first time you can watch the most famous comedy duo of all times in the original American version – the director’s cut of their last feature movie, about 100 minutes in length.

Stan and Ollie inherit a South Sea island and an old ship from a wealthy uncle. Immediately the two of them set sail, together with a stateless cook and a stowaway. Of course, some things go wrong for the fledgling sailors. Eventually the old boat capsizes during a storm, and the crew is able to find refuge on a little island which is later christened “Atoll K.”

The stranded crew lives there peacefully like Robinson Crusoe – but naturally life is a bit more chaotic as Laurel and Hardy are part of the game… Suddenly the male crew gets a female visitor, the singer “Chérie Lamour,”  (Suzy Delair) who has been abandoned on the island. When uranium is discovered on “Atoll K.” a short time later, the idyllic island atmosphere vanishes completely with adventurers from every possible country pour into paradise, and the super powers of this world all at once show an interest in the island. But Stan & Ollie have a plan …

The final Laurel & Hardy movie is both the most elaborate and the most expensive movie they made: A gag-packed comedy and a politically tinged satire with those two skilled comedians we are so familiar with. A must see for all Laurel & Hardy fans!

Diese unveröffentlichte, amerikanische, Originalfassung galt als verschollen. Der Film wurde kürzlich in den USA entdeckt und aufwendig digital restauriert. Sehen Sie erstmals auf DVD das berühmteste Comedy-Duo aller Zeiten in der amerikanischen Originalfassung ihres letzten Spielfilms – dem Director´s Cut in rund 100 Minuten Länge.

Stan und Ollie erben von einem reichen Onkel eine Südsee-Insel und ein altes Schiff. Die beiden stechen sofort in See, zusammen mit einem staatenlosen Koch und einem blinden Passagier. Natürlich geht bei den frisch gebackenen Matrosen so einiges schief. In einem Sturm kentert der alte Kahn schließlich und die Mannschaft kann sich auf eine kleine Insel retten, die später „Atoll K.“ getauft wird.

Dort leben die Gestrandeten friedlich a la „Robinson Crusoe“ – nur etwas chaotischer natürlich, schließlich sind Laurel und Hardy mit von der Partie. Doch dann bekommt die Männertruppe „Frauenbesuch“ – in Form der auf der Insel ausgesetzten Sängerin „Chérie Lamour“ (Suzy Delair). Als wenig später auch noch Uran auf „Atoll K.“ gefunden wird, ist es mit der Insel-Idylle ganz vorbei. Denn „Glücksritter“ aus aller Herren Länder fallen in das Paradies ein und auch die Großmächte dieser Welt zeigen plötzlich Interesse an der Insel. Doch Stan & Ollie haben einen Plan …

Der letzte Laurel & Hardy-Film ist zugleich der aufwendigste und teuerste, den die beiden Comedy-Genies jemals gedreht haben: Eine gagreiche, gewohnt gekonnte Komödie und  politisch gefärbte Satire. Ein Muss für jeden Laurel & Hardy-Fan!
